Whilst ‘Scare in the Community’ reversed the established practice of including ‘outsiders’ into mainstream culture by hosting the art event at the mental health art facility, ‘All that glitters is NOT institution’ sets out to test the institutional context of art and mental health itself.
Within the context of art the critique of its institutions has become institutionalized. The possibility of breaking free of the yoke of the institutions is regarded as ‘delusional’ as one is never more tied to a system than when one defines oneself in terms of being free from it.
Equally, the aim of Care in the Community to close the asylums does not actually release patients into a world of new found freedom but rather subjects them to smaller, more locally sited institutions which often duplicate much of the problems implicated with the big asylums.
Thus, despite our aims of breaking out, it seems that we are eternally trapped within institutions. ‘All that glitters is NOT institution’ aims to present art to scrutinize and challenge this seeming fait au accompli.
The event will set up a debate and showcase video and performance art works by artists who have an experience of institutions in the context of art or mental health.
